FUNDAMENTALS I - details
Locations:
Fundamentals I courses will take
place at either Gillson Beach in Wilmette (primary location) or
the Skokie Lagoons in Winnetka (back-up location) depending upon
the weather conditions and the temperament of Lake Michigan. If
you are planning on joining us, you will need to call our office
(847-256-4409) to confirm which location we will be kayaking out
of. We will have an outgoing message that will inform you on which
location we will be teaching out of that day.
What
to Expect: Upon arrival (arrive 10 minutes prior to start),
we will ask everyone to check-in with one of the instructors.
Once you have checked in and all your paperwork is accounted for,
you will begin your lesson. If you have personal belonging that
you do not want to get wet you should either leave them in your
car, seal them in a dry bag, or check with the instructor to see
if there is another alternative. We will brief you on where to go
and what to take with you. Once you check-in you will move on to
the outfit station where we will fit you with a PFD (personal flotation
device), spray-skirt and a paddle. From there you will move on to
an instructor who will give your group a brief shore lesson on equipment,
outfit, safety, techniques and program goals. Finally, you will
be fitted in a kayak and move on to the water section of the course.
On the
water, we usually start with wet exits (capsizing the kayak and
getting out). You will generally do this with an instructor standing
right beside you. We find that once someone does a wet exit, they
realize that it's easy and their confidence level increases significantly.
You will learn the basic touring strokes- forward, reverse, sweep
(turning) and stopping. You will also learn rescues- how to get
back into the kayak once you capsize. We will definitely cover two
person rescues (where you have someone else's help getting back
into your kayak) and depending on time, may also cover some options
for solo rescues. Lunch will be provided and we take that opportunity
to talk about kayaking safety issues. You will find that by the
end of the day, you have a solid base of skills and knowledge about
kayaking. You'll also have a lot of fun and hopefully be hooked
on the sport as we are! Then come join us for Fundamentals II.
