FUNDAMENTALS II - details
Locations:
Fundamentals II courses will take
place at either Gillson Beach, Wilmette (primary location) or the
Skokie Lagoons, Winnetka (back-up location) depending upon the weather
conditions and the temperament of Lake Michigan. If you are planning
on joining us, you will need to call our office the morning of the
course (847-256-4409) to confirm which location we will be kayaking
out of. We will have an outgoing message that will inform you on
which location we will be teaching out of that day.
What
to Expect: Upon arrival (please arrive 10 minutes prior to start),
we will ask everyone to check-in with one of the instructors.
Once you have checked in and all your paperwork is accounted for,
you will begin your lesson. If you have personal belongings that
you do not want to get wet you should either leave them in your
car, seal them in a dry bag, or check with the instructor to see
if there is another alternative. We will brief you on where to go
and what to take with you. Once you check-in you will move on to
the outfit station where we will fit you with a PFD (personal flotation
device), spray-skirt and a paddle. From there you will move on to
an instructor who will give your group a brief shore lesson on equipment,
outfit, safety, techniques and program goals. Finally, you will
be fitted in a kayak and move on to the water section of the course.
On the water, you will work on refining your basic strokes (forward,
reverse, sweep), focusing on techniques to maximize the effectiveness
and efficiency of your stroke. You will learn more advanced strokes
which may include high and low bracing, draw strokes in different
variations, bow rudders, hanging draws- the possibilities are numerous!
You may also learn more advanced rescues- paddle float rescue, Eskimo
bow rescue, etc. If there are particular skills you want to work
on, be sure to let your instructors know. We find that the syllabus
for the Fundamentals II clinics are very dynamic depending on the
make-up of the group and the interests of each student. Lunch will
be provided.
