Gavdos, Greece:
Inn-to-Inn Sea Kayaking
 |
Remote and unspoiled, Gavdos is located about 25 miles off of the southern
coast of Crete, long one of our favorite haunts. This remote paradise is
easy to get to yet ignored by most travelers and tourists, and its little
neighbor, Gavdoupoula, is even more so. Veterans of our Crete and Corfu
trips who are ready to return again to Greece will find this trip an easy
excuse to get away from it all and get in some great paddling while they're
at it. Based on weather conditions and the experience level of the group, we
may be able to completely circumnavigate the island, and make an open-sea
crossing over to explore Gavdopoula. |

Here at The Northwest Passage Adventures we're not much into the latest list of "musts" or "mosts". It used to be that summiting Everest was all that anyone wanted to do, but then the list of the highest mountains on each of the seven continents came into vogue. When even that challenge proved fulfillable, it became the "Seven Plus two" - the seven summits plus the two Poles.
But it seems to be human nature to want to reach the "-ests" of the world, be it the highest, the lowest, the farthest the most remote, the most primitive, the most undiscovered. So we're pleased to be offering a "most" of our own - an inaugural kayaking trip to the Greek island of Gavdos, the southernmost island in Europe. If you travelled in Greece thirty years ago and want to recapture the feel of that paradise, or if you dream of finding your own untouched Greek island filled with bare beaches in all sense of the word, Gavdos is the place for you.
On the island, we'll be staying with locals in some of the few rooms available and exploring the cave of Calypso, allegedly one of the early inhabitants of Gavdos. According to Homer's Odyssey, this magical demi-goddess beguiled Odysseus to stay with her and, incidentally, considerably increase the population of Gavdos by fathering several children.
While we are looking forward to seeing some familiar faces on this trip, it's open to all. If you've never traveled with The Northwest Passage, this specially-priced inaugural trip will be an amazing experience. And if you're returning to Greece with us, for the second or fifth or tenth time, we promise this will be as unique and fulfilling a journey as our signature trip "Inn-to-Inn Sea Kayaking on Crete".
If you like to mix more of the comforts of civilization with this journey into the unknown, consider combining a week of our "Inn to Inn" kayaking experience with this special exploratory trip to Gavdos. You'll definitely go back home more tan, more relaxed, and more fit. Remembe: You'll come ready for a vacation. You'll go back ready for anything.
