Activities: Hiking
& Safari
Fact Sheet - Itinerary - Common Questions - Top of Page TRIP ITINERARY Day 1: Arrive at Kilimanjaro Airport and transfer to Amboseli Serena Lodge. The evening will be spent briefing, checking gear and resting up for the hike ahead. Day 2: We will spend the day adjusting to the time change by going on a wildlife safari and reviewing our equipment and climbing schedule. Day 3: Today we begin our climb. This starts close to the Londorrossi Gate at Lemosho glades. The trail winds up through beautiful montane rain forest, often with lots of Kilimanjaro Black and White Colobus monkeys overhead. Buffalo and elephant often use the forest as a dry season retreat and we may see them. We will hike about 4 hours from approximately. 7,000 to 8,000 ft. and stop at Forest Camp. Day 4: Hike up out of the montane forest, into the giant heath zone, and then the moorland of the Shira plateau. We will hike about 7 hours to our camp at 11,300 ft. Day 5: Today we will hike for about four hours and gain 1,200 ft., camping at 12,500 ft. Twelve thousand feet seems to be an altitude barrier for many people, so this day allows us to acclimatize and rest. Camp will be set on a bluff overlooking the Shira Plateau. From this camp, and the next one, magnificent sunsets are possible. Day 6: Climb to Lava Tower Camp. This entails a 6-7 hour hike from 12,500 to 15,100 ft. We will walk out of the upper moorland zone into the alpine desert, a barren but spectacular zone, which gives you the feel of walking on one of the world's largest volcanoes. Day 7: This day will be another acclimatization and rest day. We will hike up a steep ridge from 15,100 to 16,000 ft. and camp at Arrow Glacier. This camp is located beneath the Western Breach and has spectacular views. Day 8: This is the big day. Today we ascend the Western Breach, our longest and toughest climb yet. We will hike for about 8 hours, from 16,000 ft. to camp in the crater at 18,300 ft., only 1,000 ft. from the summit. This camp is the most spectacular of them all and offers some incredible "side-tripping" for those feeling fit. Day 9: Today we reach Uhuru peak. This is only a 1 1/2 hour climb from camp to 19,340 ft. and it's quite spectacular. From here on out, it is all downhill! We will hike down to Baranco hut for lunch, and continue on to the hut where we will overnight. This is a tough day with a long downhill from 19,340 to 12,400 ft. Day 10: Today we leave the mountain descending from 12,400 to 6,400 ft. at Marangu Gate in about 7-9 hours, and return to The Dik Dik for a good rest and a celebration dinner. Days 11-13: Off on Safari! At the end of the dry season huge numbers of animals flock into the Tarangire National Park, a really spectacular park with a forest of Baobab trees, open grasslands, Acacia forest, swamps and lakes. It also has the largest number of elephants in Africa. Here we will stay at the tented camp which is set on a bluff overlooking the river. Day
14: Transfer to airport for our international connections. **This
