Lowering on the classic Rock Wars

The Northwest Passage has been making adventure dreams a reality for over 25 years.  From ski expeditions to the Polar regions, week long kayak journeys throughout the Mediterranean or weekend climbing programs at Devil’s Lake State Park, WI, our guides provide safe outdoor adventures for Chicago-land families!

This summer, we will be launching a new program, designed to introduce young climbers (experienced or not!) to the wonders of outdoor climbing at the beautiful Red River Gorge, Kentucky.  Whether you’re a veteran at the indoor walls around town or just always wanted to try climbing, our two week adventure will give you the skills and the opportunity to challenge yourself on some of the best outdoor rock climbing terrain in the country!

The trip will last two weeks, beginning and ending at our offices in Wilmette, IL.  We will be camping in the rolling hills of the Red River Gorge, located in the Daniel Boone National Forest in eastern Kentucky.  All meals and transportation will be provided; all you'll need is a sleeping bag and an eager spirit!  During the two weeks, each participant will have the opportunity for individualized learning, depending on skill level and desire, with our American Mountain Guiding Association certified guides.  We will ensure that all participants master the basic skills of sport leading, traditional leading, setting anchors, and safety.  Thus, everyone will have the opportunity to conquer as many climbing routes as they desire, from basic to advanced!  Regardless of your skill level at the beginning, everyone will leave a rock master!  Furthermore, after this trip, you’ll be ready to plan and execute your own outdoor climbing adventure.

If you’re a young climber, ages 14-18, and interested in spending part of your summer climbing with the Northwest Passage in Red River Gorge, this could be the trip for you!  We will be announcing informational sessions in the upcoming months or contact Bethany Kondiles for more information at (847) 256-4409.

Itinerary
Day 1:
The trip officially begins in the morning at The Northwest Passage office in Wilmette, IL.  There you will meet your guides for the next two weeks, and pack up gear.  There will be an orientation session, where we will begin to get to know one another, review the itinerary for the upcoming weeks, and answer any last-minute questions that you and your parents/guardians may have.  At this time we will also do an equipment check, and everyone will be assigned a climbing harness and helmet to keep for the duration of the trip.  We will climb into the vans, and drive the 8 or so hours down to the Red River Gorge, in the Daniel Boone National Forest in Kentucky.  We will set up camp, start a fire, eat dinner, and get ready for the next day’s climbing!

Day 2:
After breakfast, we will pack out gear and answer any questions regarding the day’s activities.  The morning will be spent learning introductory climbing skills and safety considerations, starting with basic equipment, rope skills, climbing commands, and belay technique.  We will then set up climbing routes, and use our new skills to tackle some of the famous Red River Gorge sandstone!  We will head back to camp before dark, to allow plenty of time for dinner.

Day 3 & 4:
Fresh off our introduction to “the Red,” we will continue to advance our rock climbing.  We will split into smaller groups, and you will have the opportunity to climb, belay, and hone your skills!

Day 5:
Today will be a rest day, as we will have climbed hard for several days!  There are many options for a free day in the Red River Gorge.  Alternate activities can include hiking in the Natural Bridge State Park, canoeing, kayaking, or just hanging around camp.

Day 6-8:
The concentration on these days will be learning and practicing sport leading and anchor building.  Daily itinerary will be similar to that outlined above, with a focus on smaller group lessons.

Day 9:
  Rest day.

Day 10 & 11:
Mastery of leading technique and secure anchors will allow us to begin learning to place traditional climbing gear on these days.

Day 12:
Rest day.

Day 13 & 14:
On these days, your guides will give you the opportunity to utilize your new skills to plan your own climbing.  Guides will be there to facilitate and help you choose your desired climbing destinations in the gorge and which climbs you will undertake, using only guide books and your new knowledge.

Day 15
: This morning we will break camp and begin the journey home.  We estimate to arrive back at The Northwest Passage office in late afternoon or early evening.

*This itinerary is subject to change.
