We can no longer resist kayaking in Atlantis - or so some call Santorini, one of the most dramatically beautiful of the Greek islands. We'll be sleeping next to the sea in traditional Cycladic inns, kayaking the deep blue waters of the ancient volcanic caldera, and hiking to an ancient city high above the Aegean sea. Dazzling sunsets and unique wines make Santorini a splendid new addition to our roster of indulgent adventures. Join us as we explore the most famous of the Greek islands – Santorini - as it has rarely been seen before - by kayak.

Santorini. For over 25 years, The Northwest Passage has been exploring the farthest corners of our
globe. We are overjoyed in your commitment to continue that journey. As adventurous souls

you to be flexible throughout our exploration; please do not hesitate to share questions or

Trip Iitinerary

DAY 1: Arrive on Santorini by plane or ferry. Welcome drinks and our first fabulous sunset on the island from the village of Imerovigli or Oia.

DAY 2: After a delightful breakfast and some possible sunrise viewing for the early birds among us, we'll equip ourselves on the volcanic sand beach for orientation and a kayaking lesson. Then we'll begin our exploration of the Santorini coastline, stopping for cappuccino and lunch on the way. Tonight, we'll enjoy extraordinary sunset views at a lovely dinner location overlooking the caldera.

DAY 3: We'll kayak to the world-famous black volcanic sand beach of Kamares, where we'll enjoy a cappuccino before ascending by van, foot, or donkey to the highest point on Santorini, the ancient Roman-era site of Thera. We'll explore this fascinating and well-preserved ancient city. If possible, depending on the archaeological reconstruction schedule, we will also visit the ancient Minoan town of Akrotiri, known as the "Pompeii of the Aegean" and examine some modern Minoan pottery on our return.

DAY 4: We'll be visiting the dramatic Museum of Thera, where we'll gaze at ancient Minoan frescoes and examine artifacts excavated from Akrotiri and elsewhere. We'll find lunch at one of the caldera-view restaurants in Thira, and enjoy some time for shopping in the narrow streets of the capital town before enjoying the unusual Vulcan winery tour and winetasting in the afternoon before a beautiful sunset hike along the cliffs.

DAY 5: Continuing our kayaking journey around the southern tip of Santorini, we’ll be admiring the intense colors of the banded cliffs showing the different layers of volcanic materials. A cappuccino or frappe stop at the Ferry Port of Thira will break up our journey as we continue along the interior coast of the Santorini caldera. We'll continue our examination of the "new" volcanic islands which have arisen in the caldera. The youngest of these, Nea Kameni, or “New Burned Island” is only 200 years old and is noticeably warm.

DAY 6: Today, if conditions permit, we will cross over to the island of Thirassia, a time-capsule of Greek islands from decades ago. We will enjoy a swim in volcanic hot springs that empty directly into the sea. We may overnight on this unique and unusual island, watch the glimmering lights of Oia and Thira on the “big” island, and enjoy unique traditional cuisine at a small taverna.

DAY 7: We’ll paddle back to "mainland" Santorini for our final night in a caldera-view room and enjoy an exuberant farewell dinner.

DAY 8: Breakfast ends our stay on this beautiful and enigmatical island. Final partings and transfers to flights or ferries.

Note: This is our intended itinerary. As with any adventure travel, the forces of nature can be unpredictable, causing us to make adjustments and changes to the itinerary. Rest assured that our many years of exploring have provided us with numerous options if changes need to be made. If it is too windy to paddle, various hiking, cultural and historical options will make you glad for the winds.

Trip details:
Our planned accommodations for the week may include inns, rent rooms, windmills or deluxe tent camping. Our trip is van supported the entire way. On most days, the van will meet us at the cappuccino and lunch stops. This gives everyone a chance to paddle as much as they want or take a break and shuttle in the van for part or all of a day’s itinerary. The van rides can give you a unique inland perspective of the island. Driving in Greece can be its own special adventure!

**This itinerary is subject to change. We hope to see you on this spectacular adventure. Any further questions? Feel free to contact us!

Remote and unspoiled, Gavdos is located about 25 miles off of the southern coast of Crete, long one of our favorite haunts. This remote paradise is easy to get to yet ignored by most travelers and tourists, and its little neighbor, Gavdoupoula, is even more so. Veterans of our Crete and Corfu trips who are ready to return again to Greece will find this trip an easy excuse to get away from it all and get in some great paddling while they're at it. Based on weather conditions and the experience level of the group, we may be able to completely circumnavigate the island, and make an open-sea crossing over to explore Gavdopoula.
