PADDLING TECHNIQUES - details
Locations:
Paddling Techniques courses will take
place at either Gillson Beach in Wilmette (primary location) or
the Skokie Lagoons in Winnetka (back-up location) depending upon
the weather conditions and the temperament of Lake Michigan. If
you are planning on joining us, you will need to call our office
(847-256-4409) to confirm which location we will be kayaking out
of. We will have an outgoing message that will inform you on which
location we will be teaching out of that day.
What
to Expect: Upon arrival (arrive 10 minutes prior to start),
we will ask everyone to check-in with one of the instructors.
Once you have checked in and all your paperwork is accounted for,
you will begin your lesson. If you have personal belongings that
you do not want to get wet you should either leave them in your
car, seal them in a dry bag, or check with the instructor to see
if there is another alternative. We will brief you on where to go
and what to take with you. Once you check-in you will move on to
the outfit station where we will fit you with a PFD (personal flotation
device), spray-skirt and a paddle. From there you will move on to
an instructor who will give your group a brief shore lesson on equipment,
outfit, safety, techniques and program goals. Finally, you will
be fitted in a kayak and move on to the water section of the course.
On the
water, you will review the basic touring strokes- forward, reverse
and sweep. Your instructors will give you feedback on technique
to help you develop the most efficient and effective strokes. We
will also work on more advanced strokes including draw strokes (ways
to move the kayak sideways) and bracing (ways to use your paddle
to keep your kayak upright in rough conditions). We may have time
to cover more advanced strokes such as the bow rudder, low brace
turn, hanging draw, etc. The syllabus for the course can vary depending
on the make-up of the class and the particular interests of the
students. If you have particular strokes you want to work on, be
sure to let your instructors know. It's all about having fun and
getting your needs met!
