ITINERARY

Day 1: Meet your Northwest Passage guide at Arrivals of the Heraklion Airport (HER) at 10am, and transfer to lovely Matala on the South coast of Crete--roughly one hour. Settle into your accommodations, and explore the energetic town square and boardwalk. Maybe take a dip in the Libyan Sea before gathering as a group to discuss the coming days and get oriented to the region. Take part in a sunset plein air session before tucking into your first scrumptious seaside dinner along this ancient coastline. (D) Days 2 - 5: Participate in twice daily plein air sessions as you explore the wonderful south coast of Crete. And, if you like, stir some adventure into the mix. Highlights include visiting the ancient Minoan palace of Festos, an awe inspiring vantage set on a hill in the midst of the Messara Plains. This 4,500+ year old palace was the southern seat of power for the Minoans, a socially and technologically advanced ancient people who just may have inhabited the lost city of Atlantis. You'll also have the opportunity to capture Crete's agrarian side with sessions amongst olive groves and grape Vines. You'll also visit a variety of village scenes ranging from bustling beach towns to traditional, non-touristic hamlets. Take inspiration from the austerely beautiful coastline. Capture its many moods from a variety of vantage points along the craggy, cove-ridden coast. If you like, embark on thrilling coastal adventures. Sea Kayak alongside trusty guides, and explore the endlessly interesting coastline, tucking into sea caves and paddling beneath immense bluff lines. Take to the hills and hike awe-inspiring seaside trails, routes that have been trod for over 4 millennia. Each evening is spent in beautiful Matala, a town that has appreciated the arts and artists throughout its history. It is perhaps most famous for being the temporary home of recording artists like Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, and Cat Stevens, but has long been an escape and a paradise for those who love the natural world and small, vibrant communities. (4 B, 3 D) Day 6: Savor your last morning on the idyllic South coast. Don't despair, there's time for another session along the coast. Transfer back to Heraklion. If you have time before your departure, make sure to visit the world class archaeological museum or the Minoan palace of Knossos. (B)
Our Belize kayak and camping trip was not what anyone expected due to unseasonably windy, rainy and cool weather. But we had a grand adventure nonetheless! How many times in your life do you get a chance to help a Belizean captain right and bail his swamped boat? Learn the ebb and flow of life on a tiny uninhabited Caribbean island? See a tiger ray leaping from the water trying to shake off the eel attached to its middle? Backpedal furiously to avoid a collision with a huge loggerhead turtle swimming your way as you snorkel? Eat comforting conch stew at a picnic table, the taste heightened by the sweetness of plantains and sharpness of the ubiquitous Marie Sharp's hot sauce? We experienced all that and much more with our small group this February. Our guide and fearless leader CP was perpetually cheerful and accommodating even as we confronted multiple days of high seas after landing on Moho Caye. He gave us opportunities to kayak whenever conditions permitted but also kept us safe. The local support team of Ian and his son Shane were steady and resourceful even under adverse circumstances. In addition to providing information, guidance and motor transport when needed, they fed us well, including platters of fresh fruit and hot fry jacks cooked in a primitive outdoor kitchen. This was our fourth trip with Northwest Passage, and we are on the lookout for our next one. As always, the company and its excellent staff provided a personalized, unique and fun adventure trip. My son and I had a fabulous time. Crystal clear water for paddling and swimming. Great scenery. Clean, comfortable accommodations. Wonderful professional, competent, helpful, friendly and enthusiastic guides Chris and Sean. I'd do it again in a heartbeat but I think next time I'll try a different trip. By Chuck F on Sep 30, 2024
Our family of 5 had an amazing time exploring the Apostle Islands with our guides. Our kids had a blast and will never forget this trip. We felt safe and prepared for the adventure. And to top it all off the food was terrific! One of our family members requires a gluten free diet and they were able to accommodate that with no issues. Thank you, Chris and Ted and Northwest Passage, we could not have asked for a better family trip! By Sarah B on Sep 04, 2024
